How to apply

STEP 1 - Read the ‘Audition Rules’ below and download your Instrument specific excerpts, download your excerpt backing track and impro backing track (if applicable)

STEP 2 - Practise your excerpts, impro component (if applicable) and prepare to record your audition

​

STEP 3 - When you are ready, record your audition and save your ‘mp3 links’ somewhere where you can find them. NB make sure these ‘mp3 links’ are shareable (public) otherwise the judges won’t be able to assess your submission!

STEP 4 - Pay the $25 Entry Fee and complete online application (below), which will require you to add your ‘mp3 links’.

You’ll also need your contact details and an emergency contact such as a parent, friend or partner

​

STEP 5 - submit before 11:59pm (your local time) on January 10, 2026

Audition Rules

#1 – The application portal is open to Norwegian residents between the ages of 18 and 25. (i.e. you must be 18 years old when the project starts on September 29, 2026, and you cannot turn 26 before September 29, 2026) The application portal closes on June 30, 2026 at 11:59 PM

#2 – Applications will be judged blindfolded by NYJO artistic directors.

#3 - NYJO line-up for 2026 will be announced at 1pm on July 21st via this website.

#4 – If you are applying for two different instruments, you must submit two applications

#5 - Applications are open for the following positions.

*All positions include improvisation unless otherwise specified

  • Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone (lead)

  • Alto Saxophone 2

  • Tenor Saxophone 1

  • Tenor Saxophone 2

  • Baritone Saxophone

  • Trumpet 1 lead (section player only, no solos)

  • Trumpet 2 (section player only, no solos)

  • Trumpet 3 (section player only, no solos)

  • Trumpet 4

  • Trombone 1 (lead)

  • Trombone 2

  • Trombone 3 (section player only, no solos)

  • Bass Trombone (section player only, no solos)

  • Guitar

  • Piano

  • Double bass or electric bass

  • Drum kit

  • Vocal (female only)​

If you are applying for a position on saxophone, it is an advantage to be able to double on one or more of the following instruments: flute, alto flute, clarinet and bass clarinet. Submit an audio file with an instrument-specific excerpt played with a metronome.

#6 – All applicants must submit an audio file that includes the following components:

The instrument-specific excerpt performed with and without a metronome.

For improvising roles, applicants must also submit an improv excerpt using one of the backing mp3 files below

NB: If you are applying for: Tpt 1, Tpt 2, Tpt 3, Bone 3 or Bone 4 or Drums, the improv excerpt is optional!
